My flesh, it burns!

–The Heavy

Fire (also known as afterburn) is an effect in where the enemy player is lit on fire by a Pyro's Flamethrower, Backburner, Flare Gun, or the Axtingusher, or a Sniper's flaming Huntsman arrow. Players typically receive extra damage overtime, making the Pyro a deadly adversary and excels at hit-and-run tactics. Pyros do not receive this effect, due to their suit being fire-retardant.

Survival[]

An enemy can be extingushed by:

  • Being healed by a Medic for a full second
  • Picking up a health kit, Buffalo's Steak, or the Sandvich
  • Going in deep (not shallow) bodies of water (This grants the achievement "Escape the Heat")
  • Being ÜberCharged by a Medic, Kritzkrieg does not do this
  • Airblasted by a friendly Pyro
  • Being healed by a Dispenser or Payload Cart for a full second
  • Splashed by Jarate by a friendly Sniper, Mad Milk by a friendly Scout
  • Activating the Dead Ringer as a Spy
  • Visiting a Resupply Locker in team's spawn (not available in arena mode)
  • Backstabbing an enemy player as a Spy wielding the Conniver's Kunai
  • Killing someone with the Half-Zatoichi as a Soldier or Demoman
  • Picking up ammo or weapons with the Persian Persuader out
  • Extingushed by a friendly Pyro's Manmelter alternate-fire.

These effects do not extingush flames, but helps the player live longer:

  • Eating the Sandvich (undropped) or Dakolohs Bar
  • Being healed by a Medic, Dispenser, or a Payload Cart for less than a full second
  • Drinking the Bonk! Atomic Punch preventing afterburn damage, resumes after the effects of it wearing off. Does not protect against afterburn inflicted by the Flare Gun or Detonator
  • Medic's healing rate should be enough. With the Syringe Gun or Overdose, minimum healing rate is +3 per second, restores half of the afterburn damage which is -3 per second if calculated right
  • Medic's Oktoberfest taunt saves a Medic at low health
  • Healing received by the Black Box (Soldier) or the Blutsauger (Medic)
  • Shooting an enemy coated in a friendly Scout's Mad Milk will heal you 60% of the damage you inflicted
  • Health gained on-head killed with the Eyelander, Horseless Headless Horsemann's Headtaker, or Nessie's Nine Iron as a Demoman.
  • Chargin' Targe's 50% fire resistance weapon attributes that applies to afterburn
  • Splendid Screen 20% fire resistance weapon attributes that applies to afterburn
  • Battalion's Backup 35% damage resistance buff by a Soldier
  • Dead Ringer blocks 90% damage resistance while cloaked being set on fire as a Spy
  • The Medieval Medic item set has an attribute that allows the player to outheal the Degreaser's afterburn
  • The Expert's Ordnance item set has an attribute that allows the player a 10% fire resistance that only applies to afterburns

The Spy's Spy-cicle prevents the Spy from being lit on fire for a few seconds after a backstab has been successful and registered.
